The Dewan (prime minister) of Travancore was strongly opposed to the idea of accession to the Union of India. He expressed his disdain for the Indian National Congress and Gandhi.

Ramaswami Aiyar maintained his opposition to accession. However, after pressure from Congress and the Viceroy, and internal agitation against the monarchy, the maharaja (king) relented and agreed to accede to India on 30th July.
