Passed by Oliver Cromwell, this landmark Act sought to challenge the Dutch shipping trade by only allowing English owned ships with majority English crews to transport goods to and from Britain and its colonies. The first of a series of Navigation Acts, the Act for increase of Shipping, and Encouragement of the Navigation of this Nation marked the beginning of Britain’s highly protectionist colonial policy.
