Imperial British East Africa Company given charter to administer Kenya and Uganda

The Imperial British East Africa Company was led by the trader William Mackinnon who had established trading operations in East Africa prior to receiving a Royal Charter.

The IBEAC acted as a trading and governing organisation much like the British East India Company had done. IBEAC’s governing role would later be transferred to the British Crown in 1893. Its territory was split between the Uganda Protectorate and East Africa Protectorate.
