Establishment of the King’s African Rifles

The King’s African Rifles (KAR) was formed in the context of political competition over the Horn of Africa and more broadly, the ‘Scramble for Africa’ after the Berlin Conference of 1884-85. The KAR was an amalgamation of the Central Africa Regiment, the Uganda Rifles, and the East Africa Rifles.

The regiment would later be instrumental in British victories against German forces in Africa during the First World War.
