The Bataka Party was established by educated young men of Buganda who were seeking political reforms of the Lukiiko (Buganda parliament) and the relationship between the colonial administration and the Baganda chiefs.

The Bataka Party took its name from the traditional clan leaders called bataka. The Bataka had lost power to the chiefs under the Uganda Agreement of 1900.
