Completion of the Uganda Railway

The Uganda Railway, despite its name, did not run through Uganda but the East Africa Protectorate from Mombasa to Kisumu, Lake Victoria. Construction began in 1896 with Indian labourers brought over by chartered steamship by the British Indian Steam Navigation Company.

The Uganda railway was extended into Uganda itself in the 1920s. The above map is the extent of the line in 1926.

36,811 Indians were recruited between December 1895 and March 1901. Work on the line was extremely gruelling. 2,493 men died during its construction.
