Cecil Rhodes opened up the British South Africa Company controlled territory to European colonists after receiving a royal charter that allowed for the colonisation of territory north of the Vaal River.

Territorial expansion inevitably led to conflict as was seen in the Matabele Wars in 1893-1894 and 1896-1897.
