Seeking to control the Cape to prevent French naval access to India, the British wrested the Cape of Good Hope from the Dutch East India Company (VOC) at the Battle of Muizenberg. This prompted the decline of the VOC, declaring bankruptcy in 1799 and transferring its remaining assets to the Dutch State.
