Britain consolidated its position in western Africa with the defeat of the Ashanti empire in 1874. The Ashanti Empire emerged in present-day Ghana at the beginning of the 18th century. The empire prospered through conquest and trade with Europeans in gold and slaves.

The Ashanti Empire came into conflict with the British over control of coastal territory in the Gulf of Guinea.
