Asians with Ugandan citizenship had to prove their citizenship

Asians with Ugandan citizenship had to produce documents of proof of their citizenship to the Immigration Office by 10th September.

There was much confusion about the status of Ugandan Asians that had taken up Ugandan citizenship. It was increasingly felt that even those with Ugandan citizenship were expected to leave given the difficulties imposed on this group.

A statement issued by Idi Amin was broadcast on Radio Uganda in which the following statement was made:

“Asians exempted from the expulsion decree by virtue of their professional skills would be issued with identity cards ‘in order to avoid inconvenience from the security forces who would be checking the identity of those who should have left the country.'”
