Arrival of French Catholic missionaries to Uganda – Peres Blancs

The Society of the Peres Blancs or White Fathers was a Catholic mission based in Algiers, French Algeria. They arrived in Uganda two years after the missionaries of the British Church Mission Society.

Whilst the Kabaka accommodated the White Fathers, they were unwilling to work alongside the British mission. The Catholic mission, although having arrived in the region later than their Protestant rivals, was able to draw more converts to their cause owing to having more missionaries on the ground and employing different strategies for conversion.
