Appointment of Lord Louis Mountbatten as Viceroy

Louis Mountbatten was appointed Viceroy of India in the context of the failed Cabinet Mission and British labour government eager to leave India.

Louis Mountbatten, a maternal uncle of Prince Philip and a naval chief who oversaw the recapture of territories lost to the Japanese in the late stages of the war, was appointed Viceroy. He was given the task to transfer power over India to Indian political representatives and the Indian Constituent Assembly.
